WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation Part 11 requires all BC workers at risk of falling to have fall protection training. Any work above 3 metres (10 feet) requires fall protection systems to be in place. Employers are legally responsible for ensuring workers are trained before they are exposed to a fall hazard.

Who Needs Fall Protection Training?

Fall protection training is a legal requirement for anyone exposed to a fall hazard above 3 metres on a BC job site. This includes:

  • Construction workers working at height
  • Roofers and roofing crew
  • Scaffolders and scaffold erectors
  • Ironworkers and steel erectors
  • Maintenance and facility workers
  • Window cleaners working above ground level
  • Painters and finishers working at height

What Does Fall Protection Training Cover?

A WorkSafeBC-compliant fall protection course covers the knowledge and practical skills workers need to stay safe at height:

  • Hazard identification and risk assessment at height
  • Fall arrest systems: harnesses, lanyards, and self-retracting lifelines (SRLs)
  • Anchor points: selection, inspection, and proper use
  • Rescue procedures following a fall arrest
  • Developing and understanding fall protection plans

How Long Is Fall Protection Certification Valid?

Fall protection certification is valid for 3 years in British Columbia. After 3 years, workers must complete renewal training to remain compliant. The certificate is recognized and accepted on any BC job site covered under WorkSafeBC jurisdiction.

What Happens If Workers Are Untrained?

The consequences of having untrained workers on a job site are significant:

  • WorkSafeBC can issue an immediate stop-work order, halting all work on the site
  • Employers can face fines of up to $100,000 for serious violations
  • Workers have the right to refuse unsafe work under the Workers Compensation Act
  • Employers bear legal liability for injuries and incidents involving untrained workers
